subscribing users with the api without sending an email

I want to use the API to subscribe users to a new post.
My site is highly customized and I already have the user filling out a gravity form for each post they join.

Its actually a dating site and users enter into a match with another user. The comments area is being sued as a chat system between two users.
I want to subscribe them without sending an email notifying them they have been subscribed to a new post, as that does not make sense in my case.

Is there any way to subscribe a user without sending an email?

But would be nice if API had this option. I instead needed to play a bit..
