It looks like VSCode picks a primary color for each block of consecutive characters not separated by a whitespace rather than matching every character to its color. Should try it and see how it looks compared to what we have
We could also try reducing whitespace character width by 50%, would have to make adjustments in other renderers as well so this would be pretty tricky.
Some ideas:
