I’m reaching out to get some clarity regarding META’s current stance on the use of the Open Source OpenWA API.

Specifically, I wanted to understand whether META has been banning or restricting accounts that use OpenWA in production environments, or if OpenWA (or numbers using it) are effectively whitelisted and operating without enforcement issues.

We’re currently evaluating OpenWA as part of our stack, so understanding any potential risks, recent enforcement trends, or best practices for staying compliant with META’s policies would be extremely helpful.

Hi @EmpexDigital, thanks for reaching out and for your interest in OpenWA — I really appreciate the kind words!

I want to be upfront with you so you can make an informed decision for your stack:
OpenWA is an unofficial, reverse-engineered library that interacts with WhatsApp Web. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or whitelisted by Meta/WhatsApp in any way. Meta's Terms of Service generally restrict the use of unofficial clients and automated/unauthorized access to WhatsApp, so any production use carries inherent risk.

From what I and the community have observed:

• Meta does periodically detect and ban numbers that exhibit automation patterns (high message volume, broadcast-like behavior, spam reports, rapid contact additions, etc.).
• Risk levels vary depending on usage patterns, account age/warmth, and whether the number has prior history. Newer or "cold" numbers tend to get flagged faster.
• There is no whitelist or safe harbor — enforcement can change at any time without notice.

If your use case involves business communication at scale, I'd strongly recommend evaluating the official WhatsApp Business API (via Meta directly or a BSP like Twilio, 360dialog, MessageBird, etc.). It's the only path that's officially compliant and won't put your numbers at risk of sudden suspension.

OpenWA is best suited for personal projects, internal tools, prototyping, or low-volume use cases where the risk of a number ban is acceptable. For anything mission-critical or customer-facing in production, the official API is the safer choice.
