Import with Git history

Wouldn't it be better to import Gradle project (or even create a GitHub fork) to keep all the history of the original project? Will flat/squashed import the information when i why given line was added/modified is lost.

You may be right. However, I started with creating an intellij project for a plugin in the newest version and bringing in the changes from the original project.
