It is in response to Peter's request to set the high level expectations up for the bot.
I know we are at base camp.
This is what it might look like from the summit.
The Semantic Climate Academy AI bot
Accessible systems perspective on Climate Change
The bot will ideally be :
• able to answer questions about sustainability that are framed by
• the CUTx Index
• the proximity and dangers of various planetary boundaries
• the fact that the atmosphere and the remaining natural resources should be shared equally by all people
• the fact that the Earth is a Closed Mass System, is subject to the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, and therefore all resources are finite (apart from diffuse solar energy)
• able to answer questions using the content of
• IPCC AR, IPBES, UN Emissions Gap Report
• peer reviewed papers from selected journals (Science, Nature, PNAS,...)
• able to reconcile possible conflicts between the CUTx Index framing and scientific publications (IPCC etc)
• able to answer in readable English (or other languages) that
• does not require a degree in a scientific subject
• assumes an age of 16 years upwards
• does not crop out important qualifications of scientific technical detail
• able to point at which articles / sources it got its answer from.
• able to connect the levels of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere to levels of global warming
(inc. dry land and sea surface temperatures)
able to connect the remaining carbon budget and the consequent warming to the risk of destabilising Earth system components (circulation, biosphere, cryosphere)
• be attentive to the potential of Earth systems to go over tipping points
• tipping points = irreversible on human timescales, abrupt, lead to cascading effects
• undermining of human civilisation on vast scale
• environmental disasters will impact
• Global South more heavily than Global North
• vulnerable more than the wealthy in any nation
• women more than men
• young more than old
• be aware that there are different layers of probability embedded in our future emission pathways
• it can be emphatic were needed, tentative when needed, and admit areas of understanding that are little understood
• be aware that there are different probabilities involved in our understanding of the different Earth Systems
• be aware that all NDCs and targets published by countries are not plugged into the remaining carbon budget
and should use the CUTx index to measure the relative truth of any political promise or statement about that countries commitment to emissions/resource extraction reductions.
be answers that (where relevant) are informed by the precautionary principle
The Climate Academy programme and principles
The bot will ideally be :
able to answer questions specific to the Climate Academy student book and how political, social, psychological, historical, philosophical and cultural issues relate to the climate crisis and our understanding of it.
able to make connections between the natural sciences and human sciences of the crisis.
is able to correctly use the concept "systems understanding"
these interconnecting dimensions of the climate crisis when understood as a whole, could be called a "systems understanding"
• is able to answer questions about the Climate Academy programme and direct towards possible further learning and activities
• the 3 pillars
• the certification programme
• the Moodle
• is able to navigate between particular data or events and higher system and global level truths
• able to illustrate some scientific points with metaphors or cultural examples (The Climate Academy Student book offers a model for this)
• able to consider different economic paradigms than the standard, monetarist/neo-liberal, GDP growth assumptions
•
