The ambigous output redirect hints towards the root user using Cshell csh or tcsh. I didn't test with that shell and I'll have a look into it. In the meantime you could either use a non-privileged user with a different shell or give the root user a bourne shell (sh or bash for example)

Instructions on how to prepare ZFS for non-privileged users are coming up!

Running zfsync from bash doesn't influence the shell the root user gets when logged in over SSH. Modifying root's shell with chsh does.

Since the send failed, it probably never got that far to send the child ZFS as well. Could you provide -d output for that last send?

@nlienard: could you confirm that fbce9e8 fixes the issue? I've tested it by changing the remote shell to csh and syncing worked fine (while it obviously didn't before this fix)
