I think it eventually progresses but maybe there needs to be some other status display here?

This is a sign that one of the SCSI commands is unrecognised by your drive.
You can try run drive::test with --drive-test-skip-plextor-leadin and --drive-test-skip-cache-read
If that doesn't help, you'll need to run the tests manually as per the README
It's not a good sign for the drive being compatible, though.

The ability to have redumper log/print each CDB it issues to the drive would be helpful in figuring out cases like this.
