The encoders use 2 optical switches with their LEDs in series with a 51 ohm resistor. Due to the pre-fabricated PCB that these live on the diode's power supply and the phonologic circuit have the same voltage source. We can underplot the photologic circuit to about 3.5 volts before seeing erratic behavior, but we must have enough voltage to send around 20mA (50mA MAX) to the LEDs.
