Timeouts and blank site

Hi,

I use tyrasd.github.io/latest-changes/ on a daily basis and so far it’s been great.

Unfortunately I experience timeouts relatively often. At first visit of the site everything is blank (no list on the left pane and light gray on the map right) - which is fine and intended. You expect the site to load within a few seconds. But when these timeouts appear, it takes much longer and in the end either nothing happens (view is unchanged) or the map on the right turns into "clear" view and the gray overlay is gone. But nothing happened and the loading on the site is done. It usually helps to refresh the website one, two or three more times (sometimes even more) until it’s working again.

This phenomenon usually happens every day, but I also have successful visits. So it happens sporadically and I haven’t found a pattern yet. Happens in different browsers, from different clients and IP addresses/internet connections. I also tried to reduce the "load" by decreasing the time the tool looks back (only changes in the past 24 hours instead of 7 days) and tried to keep my monitored area small (high zoom levels).

I have the impression that the main overpass server is being restricted more than before. it might be helpful to have a look at your http://overpass-api.de/api/status when things are failing. I think one way to limit your use is by starting up the page directly at the spot (or spots) you want to see, and not do an scrolling or zooming.

I checked the Overpass status but it looks fine. It also happened at first visit on a day, so definitely no "overuse" of the service from my IP address. I also already start up directly the page at the location I want to see and do no zooming/scrolling.

So there is something else.

By the way, this site is pretty similar in function but it instantly works. I'm not a dev but it would be interesting which technology this site is using for fetching the data: https://simon04.dev.openstreetmap.org/whodidit/

Also sounds like a problem to me, which is related to the rate limit of the overpass database. You can click F12 to open the developer tools. In the console at the bottom you should be able to read an error message when you encounter the problem again.
