Implemented the issue #337 fix in PR #1034:

Scope confirmed during triage: this is valid as startup/version-detection/Windows remediation, but not as a default upgrade to iii 0.18.0. The PR keeps the default iii-engine pin at 0.11.2; AGENTMEMORY_III_VERSION=0.18.0 remains explicit opt-in.

What changed:

• iii --version parsing now reads stdout and stderr.
• Compatibility decisions require a successful probe plus a version matching the configured pin.
• Private pinned iii installs still take precedence over mismatched PATH iii binaries.
• Windows zip assets remain manual-only for native install, so startup/doctor guidance no longer promises an automatic tar-based install on Windows.
• Doctor diagnostics now report parseable mismatches, unparseable probes, failed probes, and manual-only install support more accurately.

Verification:

• Targeted Vitest for iii runtime/startup/doctor behavior passed.
• Full corepack pnpm test, lint, and build passed.
• Semgrep and current-tree Gitleaks passed.
• OSV was not required because no dependency or lockfile surfaces changed.
