Camera not detected on CM4

Hi,

I am unable to make the camera work on a CM4 mounted on a CM4-DISP-BASE-2.8A.
According to the schematics, the board MIPI-CSI connects to the 4-lane CAM1 on the CM4, so it should support the IMX283.

I am running the latest Raspberry Pi OS (Trixie) and followed the Quick Start Guide to setup the camera, but I get the following errors in dmesg:

imx283 10-001a: failed to read chip id b, with error -5
imx283 10-001a: probe with driver imx283 failed with error -5

The same setup works fine on a Pi5 and other cameras (e.g. imx708) are detected on the cm4.

Any idea what the problem could be?

Is there pull up resistor on the baseboard? it is labeled as 1.8/NC

I'm actually not sure where should I look at for R2 and R3... why the heck did they not label the components....

So if pullup resistor is not there, can you solder R2/R3 with 10K?

but do you mean the CM-R2 and CM-R3 attached to SCL0 and SDA0?
those should be internal resistors on the CM4 board

Hmm yeah then I'm running out of ideas, I bring up IMX283 on CM4 IO boards so I'm sure it supports CM4, my allsky camera are using my custom build CM4 boards also.

I see they have some weird dts file required to enable camera (Section: "Turn on the Camera"), so maybe the pin config has changed?

Try add ,always-on to dtoverlay like dtoverlay=imx283,always-on and see if you can measure power on the camera board.

Without the always-on, I can read the temperature from the camera at 0x60, but with the always-on, the temperature sensor is not detected but I can measure power on the camera board.

Just to double check, with the always-on, were you able to measure power on 2.9V/1.2V?

Temperature sensor not detected when that flag enables is so weird, because that is just enable pin from CAM_GPIO to start the power rails on camera sensor, which shouldn't impact the temperature sensor.

Could it be a power issue? (The baseboard camera port not providing enough power to power the camera board when the sensor is on)
In case, is it possible to power the camera board from a separate source?

I think it is a software issue....
Actually can you help me try refresh install a new latest RPI image, and don't go through the setup and just add the dtoverlay=imx283 and see if it is working?

imx283 support is in mainline now, so technically you don't need to recompile everything, and I wonder if there is a issue to my dtoverlay if IMX708 works out of the box.

I tried a fresh install with only dtoverlay=imx283, but unfortunately it still doesn't work and there is a new error in dmesg:

When adding always-on there is no power on the 2V9 and 1V2 pins

Does i2cdetect -r 10 returns some address?

If you wanna try something dangerous, with always-on flag there is a EN test point that should be high constantly, if you did not see that you can connect it to 3.3V to force the camera enable and see if it detects it now.

but is the always-on flag supported in the mainline dts? I don't see it in imx283-overlay.dts

Interesting..... it definitely can incorporate that, but that makes the experiment way to dangerous....

Yeah this is so weird, I'll try to get one to reproduce the issue on my end so I can probe the signals directly.
I still think this is dtoverlay configuration issue that I2C maybe misconfigured to different port or cam gpio to some other gpios so that with always-on the power is not there but without it I2C apparently works ok (as 0x48 temperature sensor appears on the same bus as what the kernel think imx283 should be).
