Is there a way to filter which objects are visible based on their type and some property value?

Yes, you can set certain state (hidden, highlighted etc.) to objects by their type. If you want to select by a property value, you will need to run your selection code on server and get a list of IDs (entity.EntityLabel). You can use this list to set the state of all these items in one call.
