Hi! I just saw this project and it looks interesting to tinker a little with Zigbee, so I'm wondering, what do I need to run this? I have access to some ESP32 devices (also Xbee and I could get a Nordic chip).

Hello!

In theory any adapter will work as long as it runs OpenThread RCP firmware. I've had the best experience with Silicon Labs EFR32MG21/EFR32MG24 based adapters. The Nordic adapter I tested had issues with raw packet handling and I'm not aware of any OpenThread RCP firmware for the XBee. I think ESP32 devices with Thread support may have OpenThread NCP firmware, maybe they also have RCP?

You can also re-flash any EFR32 Zigbee stick with OpenThread firmware, there are many community builds of it available for any popular adapter.

I would get a name-brand device, as that will have guaranteed community firmware. Sonoff, ZBT-1/2, SMLIGHT, etc.
