Most budgeting apps are built like accounting software - rows of numbers, red warnings, and a nagging sense that you're doing something wrong. That approach works for spreadsheets. It doesn't work for people.
SunFlow was built on a simple idea: your budget should feel like something you're growing, not something you're policing.
Every expense you log feeds into a single, living visual - a sunflower that reflects the health of your current budget cycle. Spend wisely and it grows. Ignore it and it stalls. There's no shame mechanic, no red banners, no push notifications guilting you into opening the app. Just a quiet, honest reflection of your habits.

SunFlow is built especially for students, hostel life, and early-career budgets - situations where money is tight, income is irregular, and every rupee needs to be seen without needing a finance degree to understand where it went.
Why it exists
- Traditional finance apps assume a stable salary, a bank API, and patience for spreadsheets - most students have none of the three.
- Budget fatigue is real: people stop tracking expenses the moment tracking feels like a chore.
- Financial awareness should be calming, not anxiety-inducing.

Installing the APK
- Download the APK file to your device.
- Open your file manager and tap the downloaded file.
- If prompted, enable Install unknown apps for your browser or file manager (Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps).
- Tap Install, then open SunFlow.
Warning
Android shows an "unknown sources" warning for any APK installed outside the Play Store - this is standard behavior, not a sign that SunFlow is unsafe.
Note
SunFlow is not yet on the Google Play Store. A Play Store release is on the roadmap.
Your sunflower is a live reflection of how your current budget cycle is going - no numbers required to understand it at a glance.

Tip
If you overspend, SunFlow doesn't scold you. The sunflower simply pauses its growth until the next cycle - a gentle reset instead of a guilt trip.
Each petal also reflects how much a category (food, travel, subscriptions, etc.) consumes from your total budget, so your spending feels visual and readable rather than a wall of numbers.
SunFlow's analytics are designed to be read in seconds, not studied like a report.
Safe Daily Allowance - recalculated every morning:
Safe Daily Allowance = (Total Budget − Spent So Far) ÷ Days Remaining
If you spend less than your allowance on a given day, SunFlow offers two choices for the leftover amount:
- Add to Today - roll unused money into today's allowance
- Spread Evenly - distribute it across all remaining days
Spending Heatmap - a GitHub-style contribution calendar where brighter cells mean heavier spending days, making patterns like salary-week spikes or calm recovery days obvious at a glance.
Period Summary - at the end of every cycle, SunFlow generates a short editorial-style recap:

- 📊 Category performance vs. plan
- 🎭 An emotional badge for the cycle - Calm Month, Adventurous Month, or Focus Month

Is SunFlow free?
Yes - SunFlow is completely free, open source, and has no subscriptions.
Does SunFlow require an internet connection?
No. SunFlow is fully offline-first; every feature works without a network connection.
Do I need to create an account?
No account or sign-up is required for core features.
Is my data safe?
Your data stays on your device by default. Nothing is uploaded unless you export and share it yourself.
Can I export my data?
Yes, anytime, as CSV or JSON from Settings.
What happens if I uninstall the app?
Local data is removed with the app, so export a backup first if you want to keep your history.
Does SunFlow support multiple currencies?
Currency support depends on your build configuration - check Settings for available options.
Can I set multiple budgets at once?
Multiple simultaneous budget periods are on the roadmap.
What happens if I overspend?
Your sunflower simply pauses its growth for the cycle - there's no punitive warning system.

Can I customize spending categories?
Custom categories are on the roadmap; a default set is available today.
Does SunFlow send notifications or reminders?
Yes, optional local reminders to log expenses - no server involved, and they can be disabled anytime.

Can I use SunFlow for shared or family budgeting?
Not currently - SunFlow is designed for individual, on-device budgets.
