In 2017, Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen were the final two candidates in the French Presidential Election. The two candidates had drastically different approaches to governing, and as such, the election was a major topic of discussion on Twitter. Our data is from a significant peak in user activity on twitter between April 26th and April 29th of 2017. Here are our findings:

For this notable period in history we wanted to find the busiest day for French twitter for correlation with news happenings during that period.

Two notable twitter accounts lead by a significant margin above all others – French media tracking accounts that post links to French news sites.

Top ten Tweeters:

  1. Trendinalia France - France media source
  2. Média Soignant - More media
  3. ?
  4. Kristel_47 - Random lady who shares everything
  5. Chat Perdu - Cat adoption
  6. Forkster Music Promo - Music studio
  7. Trendsmap Paris - France media source
  8. Topher - Music producer
  9. ?

The power of the media outlets is very clear -- they repeatedly post particular hashtags often enough that they comprise the majority of sources for this leading hashtag.

Out of all the tweets in this period, these hashtags appeared most often. The hashtag TPMP1000 is for a French television news show, which is expected in this time period. Following is KohLanta, a reality television show reminiscient of "Survivor". Even during significant political movements people love a good show!
