Merging from my forked feature branch to the upstream feature branch; we can merge to main later.
Mostly addresses the issue #1003 - but a new sub-issue has been created to address other related view issues.
Set viewBox attribute when SVG is created to match initial dimensions (100% zoom). This prevents unexpected visual changes on first zoom control interaction.
