Hi there, I'm Chris!

About My Work

I am a marine molecular ecologist studying how environmental stressors shape organismal function and ecological communities throughout Puget Sound and the greater Salish Sea. My work focuses on intertidal communities (with mussels as the star of the show) by integrating epigenetic mechanisms, traditional biomarkers, and community ecology to understand how legacy contaminants influence biological systems in these ecosystems. My work lives at the intersection of science, education, and equity โ€” with a special fondness for tide pool creatures and stories from the sea.

๐Ÿฆช Research Themes

Environmental Epigenetics & Molecular Response

  • Integrating epigenetic mechanisms, like DNA methylation and chromatin-level responses, in marine invertebrates
  • Linking contaminant exposure โ†’ regulatory change โ†’ organismal function
  • Exploring epigenetic signals as early indicators of stress and contaminant exposure

Biomarkers & Ecotoxicology

  • p450, SOD, and morphometric responses across Puget Sound
  • Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) frameworks
  • Connecting contaminant mixtures to biological outcomes

Community Ecology & eDNA

  • Metabarcoding approaches to assess biodiversity
  • Linking molecular signals to community composition
  • Intertidal ecosystem dynamics

Education, Access & Community Science

  • Intertidal ecology curriculum development
  • Asset-based, community-centered science education
  • Creating pathways into marine science

โ“ Current Research Questions

  • How do contaminant mixtures influence DNA methylation patterns in marine invertebrates?
    • Do they align with traditional biomarker response?
    • What can they reveal that traditional biomarkers cannot/ may not?
  • Can epigenetic signals act as early-warning indicators before physiological impairment?
  • What does environmental memory look like in coastal systems?

๐Ÿ”ฆ Featured Projects

  • WDFW 'Mussel Watch' Biomarker Analysis Spatial and statistical analysis of biomarker responses across 74 sites in Puget Sound

  • Utilizing DNA Methylation as an Indicator of Contaminant Exposure Building reproducible pipelines for whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) analysis

  • Yellow Island eDNA Project Assessing intertidal community composition using metabarcoding approaches

  • Intertidal Ecology Education Programs Designing accessible, hands-on marine science learning experiences

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Methods & Approaches
