🛣️ MRoadGen - Build complex road networks on terrain

📌 About this project

MRoadGen is a tool for the Blender software. It uses Geometry Nodes to draw roads across uneven ground. You use this tool to place paths on your 3D models. It handles the shape of the road so you do not have to move every point by hand. This saves time when you design large maps or cities. The system works with high-density meshes. It keeps your roads smooth even when the ground is bumpy.

You need a computer that runs the current version of Blender. We suggest using a system with at least 16 GB of RAM. Your graphics card must support the requirements for Blender 4.0 or newer. 🛠️ Step-by-step setup guide

Follow these steps to prepare the tool for use.

  1. Locate the folder you downloaded.
  2. Right-click the folder and select Extract All.
  3. Choose a location and press Extract.
  4. Open your Blender software.
  5. Go to the File menu at the top left.
  6. Select Append from the list.
  7. Find the location where you extracted your folder.
  8. Open the MRoadGen file inside that folder.
  9. Look for a folder named NodeTree.
  10. Select MRoadGen and press the Append button.

🚀 Using the road generator

Now you add the tool to your 3D workspace.

  1. Switch your current window to the Geometry Node workspace.
  2. Ensure you select your ground mesh.
  3. Click the New button to start a node setup.
  4. Press Shift + A to open the search menu.
  5. Type MRoadGen in the search box.
  6. Click the tool name to drop it into your workspace.
  7. Connect the Geometry output from the tool to the Group Output node.
  8. Your road appears on the surface of your model.

🎛️ Adjusting your road settings

You see a panel on the right side of the screen when you select the road object. These settings change the look of your road.

  • Width: This changes how wide your road is on the terrain.
  • Smoothness: This slider removes sharp turns in your path.
  • Material Slot: This allows you to pick colors or textures for the road surface.
  • Slope Limit: This tells the road to stop if the ground is too steep.

🧩 Troubleshooting common issues

If you encounter problems, check these items first.

The road does not show up. Make sure your mesh has enough detail. If the mesh is flat or has few points, the tool might fail. You can add a Subdivision Surface modifier to your ground mesh before you add the road nodes.

The road looks jagged. Increase the smoothness setting in the side panel. You might also need to add more points to your ground mesh to help the road follow the surface better.

The road ignores the terrain. Check the input connections. The geometry must link correctly to the node group. Ensure the node group sits between the input and the output.

The Blender software feels slow. Complex roads require power. If your computer slows down, hide the road object while you work on other parts of your scene. Show it again when you need to make changes.

📏 Best practices for your workflow

Design your road path before you enable all the heavy settings. Use a simple line to sketch the route. Once the route looks right, adjust the width and the material properties. Save your work often. Create a new copy of your mesh before you apply any destructive changes. This lets you go back if you make a mistake. Test your road on small areas first. Large maps take more time to calculate.
