Case Studies

In this section we highlight a number of case studies which have been carried out using this dashboard. The cases are discussed chronologically mirroring the development of the dashboard and supporting software.

The Chilling

The Chilling: A global study of online violence against women journalists UNESCO Report

This wide ranging report into online violence against women journalists contained two big data case studies, both of which relied upon analysis carried out used an early version of this dashboard. One of the studies extended the previous work looking at the abuse faced by Maria Ressa, while the second study looked at attacks against the investigative reporter Carole Cadwalladr.

Marianna Spring

This study involved Twitter data relating to the BBC Journalist Marianna Spring covering the period from the 24th March 2021 to the 7th of December 2022. The results of our analysis were used in two BBC Panarama programmes looking at online abuse/hate. The first programme entitled Online Abuse: Why Do You Hate Me? aired on the 18th October 2021. The second programme Elon Musk's Twitter Storm aired on the 6th of March 2023. In both episodes data from the analysis is explained, on camera, to Marianna.
