🔍 Repo Scout

Repository Intelligence Engine for Open Source Exploration

Understand repositories before contributing.

Repo Scout is a deep repository intelligence engine built to analyze unfamiliar codebases and help contributors discover how systems work, where issues originate, and what areas are worth contributing to.

This project is evolving toward:

✨ Why Repo Scout?

Open source repositories are difficult to evaluate quickly.

Repo Scout reduces exploration time by turning repositories into structured intelligence.

Instead of asking:

"Which issue should I solve?"

Repo Scout helps answer:

"How does this project work?""What subsystem owns this behavior?""What is the probable root cause?""Where should I contribute?"

🧩 Core Systems

🧭 Setup Analyzer

Predicts repository execution viability before installation.

Signals:

  • 📦 Package manager compatibility
  • 🏗 Workspace & monorepo detection
  • 🔐 Environment dependency estimation
  • ⚡ Execution risk scoring
  • 🧪 Runtime compatibility

Outputs:

🟢 full
🟡 static_only
🔴 unsupported

🧠 Repository Intelligence

Transforms repositories into structured understanding.

Capabilities:

  • 🔎 Investigation
  • 🕸 Dependency Analysis
  • 🧾 Evidence Collection
  • 🧠 Root Cause Discovery
  • 🛠 Fix Planning
  • 📈 Impact Estimation

🖥 Runtime Layer

Optional execution path.

Capabilities:

  • 🌐 Runtime scanning
  • 🛣 Route discovery
  • 📋 Issue aggregation
  • 🎯 Candidate generation

Runtime signals are grounded before deep analysis.

🚦 Current Status

🟢 Active Development

✅ Completed

  • Architecture migration
  • Type centralization
  • Setup analysis
  • Deep analysis pipeline
  • Grounding validation
  • Multi-repository orchestration
  • Cleanup & simplification

⏸ Deferred

  • Automatic issue creation
  • Automatic PR creation
  • Autonomous repository execution

🛣 Planned

  • 📡 GSSoC Notifier
  • 🗃 Repository Queue
  • 📊 Visualization Layer

🚀 Running

Build

npm run build

Analyze Single Repository

Analyze a single GitHub repository using the scout script:

npm run scout -- <github-repository-url>

Example:

npm run scout -- https://github.com/Karanjot786/TermUI

Analyze Multi-Repository

Analyze multiple repositories sequentially using the scout:multi script:

npm run scout:multi

Configuration (repos.json)

To configure repositories for multi-repo analysis, edit/create a repos.json file in the root of the project:

{
  "repositories": [
    {
      "url": "https://github.com/Karanjot786/TermUI",
      "tags": ["react"],
      "enabled": true
    }
  ]
}
  • url: The absolute URL to the GitHub repository.
  • tags: Optional array of tags categorizing the repository (e.g., ["react"]).
  • enabled: Set to true to include the repository in the run, or false to skip it.

🎯 Principles

  • 🧠 Understanding > Automation
  • 🧾 Evidence > Assumptions
  • 👨‍💻 Human Approval > Autonomous Actions
  • ⚡ Insight > Volume

🏆 Vision

Build tools that help contributors understand software deeply before writing code.

Made with curiosity, experiments, and too many repository runs ☕
