"Beating" the Running Man race gives a reward now. In truth you can win it, but the Running Man offers more encouraging dialogue in vanilla OoT if you beat the time set by him. If you manage to beat the suggested time when in Child Quest he'll give you the Amulet of Energy (if you didn't not had it already).
