Open Source Kigali

Open Source Kigali is a community-driven initiative that showcases and supports open source projects built by developers from Rwanda and across Africa.

Our goal is to make open source visible, accessible, and collaborative.


Mission

  • Promote open source contribution in Rwanda and across Africa
  • Help developers showcase their open source projects
  • Enable collaboration between beginners and experienced engineers
  • Connect local projects to the global open source ecosystem

Project Categories

Projects are grouped by domain:

  • EdTech – Education & learning platforms
  • AgriTech – Agriculture & farming solutions
  • FinTech – Payments, banking, financial tools
  • JobTech – Hiring, HR, career platforms
  • HealthTech – Healthcare & medical solutions
  • GovTech – Public services & civic tech
  • Cloud & DevOps

  • Open Tools / Libraries

All community projects are listed in PROJECTS.md

Each project includes:

  • Project name
  • Short description
  • Tech stack
  • GitHub repository link
  • Project maintainer

How to Add Your Project (2 Ways)

Option 1: Fork & Pull Request (Recommended)

  1. Fork this repository
  2. Open PROJECTS.md
  3. Add your project under the correct category
  4. Commit your changes
  5. Open a Pull Request
  6. The Open Source Kigali team will review and merge 🎉

Option 2: Create an Issue (Beginner Friendly)

If you’re new to GitHub:

  1. Go to Issues
  2. Click New Issue
  3. Select “Add a new project”
  4. Fill in the form
  5. A maintainer will add the project for you

Contribution Rules

  • Project must be open source
  • GitHub repository must be public
  • The project repository must include a README
  • Be respectful and collaborative
