Ultramarine Shades are community maintained spins of Ultramarine with user interfaces that aren't already or can't be Editions.
These are all Shades in the order they were created.
If a Shade is prefixed by a ★ it's maintained by Fyra staff, a Terra maintainer, or has had one year of successful releases.
If prefixed by a 🛝 it's in the Playground level, which means the maintainer may still be playing with things and the Shade may not be fully stable yet.
Maintainers with an asterisk* after their name are Fyra staff or a Terra maintainer.
Maintained by: Owen Zimmerman* owen@fyralabs.com and Jonah* jonah@fyralabs.com.
Start shadin'.
We categorize Shades on how reliable the maintainers have been. Regardless, all Shades are reviewed by the Fyra team for major bugs and security issues.
These are any images that aren't quite ready for the limelight, the maintainer may still be experimenting or has simply opted not to leave the Playground.
Shades can leave the Playground in 4 ways:
- The Shade is functional and the Maintainer chooses to move to the regular Shade level
- Maintainer chooses to end development of their Shade
- Spun off into an independent distro (without the Ultramarine branding)
- Spun off into Universal Blue or the Fedora Sandbox
Regular ol' Shades are all well maintained and held to a level of quality. Shades are further distinguished with a star for the most reliable, they're either maintained by Fyra staff, a Terra maintainer, or have had one year of successful releases.
- Shades cannot be malicious (duh)
- Shades are not personal custom images, and should not include apps that don’t serve a general usecase (don't make Omarchy)
- Shades are generally focused around a unique user interface
- Shades can be focused around a particular feature or set of features, for example, a Nix Shade, or a Super-Optimized Shade.
- Shades focused around a user interface should try to remain close to the Editions, not adding features that aren't found by default in the Editions (i.e. Niri Shade adding Nix or a custom kernel)
- Hardware Enablement efforts should be brought upstream to the Anywhere Initiative rather than put in a Shade.
- Fyra staff may step in to correct course or fix major issues for the following reasons
- The maintainer(s) request it
- The maintainer(s) are ignorant to the issue
- The issue affects an edition and is indirectly fixed
- The issue is breaking user systems
