# Smart Water Metering Without the Six-Month Build

Water distribution networks generate continuous streams of data - flow rates, pressure readings, water quality measurements, pump states, and tank levels. Yet most utilities and facility managers still discover problems reactively. Leaks surface as unexplained consumption spikes. Pipe bursts get reported by tenants. Compliance gaps show up during audits.

The core issue is not a lack of sensors. It is the gap between what those sensors measure and what operators know, in time to act on it. Manual reads happen monthly. Automated meters that upload once a day produce billing numbers, not operational intelligence. Neither tells you that a zone is losing pressure overnight, that turbidity crept above safe limits, or that a pump has been running 40% longer than normal for the past two weeks.

The Magistrala Smart Water Metering solution pack is built to close that gap. It connects field devices to a live telemetry pipeline, runs continuous detection against incoming data, and delivers alarms, dashboards, and compliance reports out of the box - without a custom integration build.

## What the solution pack does

The Smart Water Metering solution pack connects water meters, pressure sensors, water quality sensors, pump controllers, and tank level sensors to a single telemetry pipeline, built on Magistrala's open-source IoT platform. Devices connect natively over MQTT, HTTP, CoAP, or WebSocket. For field devices running other protocols, Magistrala's [LoRa](https://magistrala.absmach.eu/docs/dev-guide/extensions/lora/) and [OPC-UA](https://magistrala.absmach.eu/docs/dev-guide/extensions/opcua/) adapters handle the translation, as does the [S0 gateway](https://hardware.absmach.eu/s0), which supports wireless M-Bus, NB-IoT, LTE-M, WiFi, and BLE.

Data flows through a validation stage that filters out sensor noise and firmware errors before any detection rule sees it. Clean readings reach the detection layer within seconds of the device publishing them.

Seven detection rules cover the failure modes that matter most in distribution networks.

**Burst and leak detection.** Flow and pressure readings are monitored together. A sudden high-flow, low-pressure combination triggers a Critical alarm within one publish cycle, typically 30 seconds. A slower, sustained flow deviation at reduced pressure triggers a Warning, which is the signature of a small leak before it becomes a failure.

**Water quality monitoring.** pH, turbidity, TDS, and temperature are checked against WHO drinking water guidelines on every incoming record. An exceedance raises an alarm and sends an email at the moment the reading lands, not at the end of a shift.

**Device health monitoring.** A device that stops transmitting gets flagged within 10 to 20 minutes. A silent meter in a compliance report is a liability. Knowing a device is offline before the next scheduled read means you dispatch a technician rather than explain a data gap to a regulator.

## Five dashboards, two templates, three reports

The solution pack ships with five pre-built dashboards, each designed for a specific audience and use case.

Operators monitoring a live network need flow rate, pressure trend, tank levels, and open alarms on a single screen, with the ability to respond without switching applications. The Real-Time Monitoring Dashboard provides exactly that, including a direct pump control switch.

The KPI Dashboard gives management a high-level view of total consumption, average network pressure, and active alarm count - ready to use immediately after deployment with no additional configuration.

The Alarm Monitoring Dashboard is designed for control room staff and NOC operators. It presents open alarms broken down by severity, with each entry showing its cause, current value, threshold, and timestamps - giving teams a complete triage view at a glance.

The Network Map Dashboard places every device on a map and renders District Metered Area boundaries. When a zone alarm fires, operators see the affected geography immediately, without cross-referencing a spreadsheet.

The Consumption Analytics Dashboard serves NRW analysis and demand planning. Thirty days of historical usage, hourly peak patterns over the past week, and a three-month volume comparison give the data needed to calculate system losses and justify infrastructure spend.
