Here is the description of installing Node and NPM via NVM. If you prefer another way to install Node and NVM or you already install its, you can miss this step. To start off, we will need to get the software packages, that will allow us to build source packages. The NVM script will use these tools to build the necessary components:

 $ sudo apt-get update
 $ sudo apt-get install build-essential libssl-dev

After the required packages will be install, you can download NVM installation script from project's GitHub page. The version number can be different, the latest version you can see here.

 $ curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/creationix/nvm/v0.33.8/install.sh -o install_nvm.sh

Run the script with bash:

 $ bash install_nvm.sh

To get access to the NVM functionality, you'll need to reopen your terminal or run command:

 $ source ~/.profile

To find out which versions of Node are available, you can type:

 nvm ls-remote

The newest LTS version at the time of this writing is v8.9.4. Install and use it by typing:

 $ nvm install 8.9.4
 $ nvm use 8.9.4
