π‘οΈ Sentinel: [CRITICAL] Fix frontend authentication bypass for Display Rules Manager - #103
Conversation
Replaced the insecure `username === 'admin' && password === 'admin'` check in `DisplayRulesManager.tsx` with a secure backend verification call using `fetchDisplayConfigs`. Also added a critical learning to the sentinel journal and staged it using `git add -f`. Co-authored-by: aperetti <482392+aperetti@users.noreply.github.com>

π¨ Severity: CRITICAL
π‘ Vulnerability: A frontend authentication bypass existed in the
DisplayRulesManager.tsxcomponent, where administrative access was granted via a hardcoded client-side check (username === 'admin' && password === 'admin').π― Impact: Anyone with access to the frontend could bypass the authentication prompt by simply entering "admin/admin" regardless of the actual server credentials, gaining unauthorized access to the Display Rules Manager. Furthermore, the logic was fully visible in the client-side JavaScript bundle.
π§ Fix: Removed the hardcoded conditional check and replaced it with a secure token verification request. The app now generates the Basic Auth token, saves it temporarily, and attempts to fetch the display configs via
fetchDisplayConfigs(). If the backend rejects the credentials with a 401 Unauthorized, the token is correctly removed and an "Invalid credentials" error is shown.β Verification: Run
npm run testandnpm run lintin thefrontenddirectory. Attempt to log in with invalid credentials to confirm they are rejected by the backend, and attempt to log in with valid backend credentials to confirm access is securely granted.PR created automatically by Jules for task 16331812723911802439 started by @aperetti
