I guess my previous PR was closed due to conflicts arising from a forced push. Trying again here with this one.
(Please note that several issues in other, unrelated, parts of the code prevent need fixing to get this PR to pass local checks - I haven't included those fixes here, under the assumption that they are known and in-progess)
