I've written a function that I think does what we discussed yesterday, but I am realizing that I have no idea how we get from this to the output that we discussed yesterday or even if this sufficiently does what we need it to do! So please share feedback and I can keep tweaking between now and our next meeting (I need all the practice I can get!)
