30-Day Photoshop Roadmap for Social Media & Personal Branding

Daily commitment: 1 hour | Focus: Personal branding, social posts, headshots, cinematography

PHASE 1: Foundations (Days 1-7)

Day 1: Interface & Workspace Mastery

30 mins: Learn

  • Understand Photoshop workspace: Toolbox, Layers panel, Properties, Menu bar
  • Navigate: File, Edit, Image, Layers, Select menus
  • Zoom (Z key), Pan (Hand tool), Fit to screen (Cmd/Ctrl+0)
  • Custom workspace for social media work

30 mins: Project

  • Task: Open a photo. Resize it for Instagram (1080x1080px). Export as JPG.
  • Practice: Cmd/Ctrl+Alt+I (Image Size), understand DPI (72 for social, 300 for print)

Day 2: Lighting Fundamentals (Part 1) - Understanding Light & Shadow

30 mins: Learn

  • Light direction: where does shadow fall? How does it sculpt the face?
  • Hard vs soft light (shadows with hard edges vs gentle gradients)
  • Highlight = brightest area (usually on subject)
  • Shadow = darkest area (creates depth & dimension)
  • Catch light = small bright spot in eyes (makes them "pop")
  • Exposure vs contrast: exposure brightens all, contrast separates light/dark
  • Histogram: visual representation of tonal range (darks left, lights right)

30 mins: Project

  • Task: Open a portrait photo. Observe:
    • Where is the brightest light hitting?
    • Where are shadows? Do they sculpt the face well?
    • Are the eyes dull or do they have catch light?
    • Note: This is observation only. You'll manipulate next.
  • Goal: Train your eye to see light

Day 3: Lighting Fundamentals (Part 2) - Dodge, Burn & Shadow/Highlight

30 mins: Learn

  • Dodge tool (D): Lighten specific areas (cheekbones, eyes, highlights)
  • Burn tool (D): Darken specific areas (jawline definition, eyes, contours)
  • Exposure & Range settings (shadows vs midtones vs highlights)
  • Shadow/Highlight adjustment (Image > Adjustments > Shadows/Highlights)
    • Lift shadows without blowing highlights
    • Recover detail in blown-out areas
  • Curves adjustment for precision: lift midtones, crush blacks, brighten specific tones
  • Catch light creation: where to place highlights for eye impact

30 mins: Project

  • Task: Retouch a portrait using Dodge/Burn:
    1. Use Burn on jawline/cheekbones (subtle definition)
    2. Use Dodge on forehead/nose to brighten
    3. Dodge the eye area to create catch light effect
    4. Apply Shadow/Highlight adjustment layer
    5. Darken background slightly with Burn
  • Goal: Understand how lighting sculpts faces

Day 4: Selection Tools & Isolation

30 mins: Learn

  • Selection tools: Rectangle Select (M), Ellipse Select, Lasso (L), Magic Wand (W)
