Book Bans in the United States 2021-2022

Description

To investigate the uptick in book banning across the United States, this Plotly/Dash visualization tool will allow you to easily examine book ban metrics with state education scores, school demographics and funding, as well as locating public libraries across the US.

Datasets Used

  1. Banned Books dataset from Center for Data Innovation (https://datainnovation.org/2022/07/tracking-banned-books/)
  2. US Census dataset from Kaggle (https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/muonneutrino/us-census-demographic-data?select=acs2015_county_data.csv)
  3. Public Library dataset from Kaggle (https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/imls/public-libraries)
  4. US states geoJson file from GitHub (https://github.com/PublicaMundi/MappingAPI/blob/master/data/geojson/us-states.json)
  5. State code and name dictionary from Kaggle (https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/jonbown/state-code)

Instructions

  1. Clone repository
  2. Open repository in your terminal
  3. Execute "jupyter-lab" command
  4. Open jupyter notebook in jupyter-lab
  5. Run entire kernal
  6. Open link: http://127.0.0.1:8050/
  7. Explore the dashboard
