Synesthesia is built on the DE1 FPGA kit shown below:
The DE1 board is a low cost (150 USD) FPGA kit from Terasic. Also known as the Cyclone II Starter Kit, it centers around a Cyclone II FPGA (EP2C20F484C7) from Altera. More information on DE1 can be found here.
