You're right about the package size difference. This comes down to a few decisions made to prioritize a modern user experience and reliable video playback.

The main difference is that UndeadWallpaper uses ExoPlayer (the same library that powers YouTube) for its video engine. It's much larger than the older, built-in "MediaPlayer", but it provides seamless playback when looping and better compatibility. We're also using Material Components library to create a modern interface.

The ultra-slim app you linked is a great minimal project that avoids these larger dependencies, but it also lacks features like the Recents list or a stutter free playback when looping. I've tested MediaPlayer and it's not as smooth as ExoPlayer.

Getting a slimmed-down version of the app onto F-Droid/Zap can be a long-term goal of mine. This would likely require creating a dedicated 'F-Droid build' that replaces these libraries, which is a significant task.

I'm gonna keep this issue open to track this possibility for the future. I really appreciate you bringing this up, it's interesting to have the app there.
