FracFeed: Global database of the fraction of feeding predators

A compilation of predator diet surveys that report on the proportion of "empty stomachs" or "not feeding individuals" (i.e., the Fraction of Feeding individuals).

This main directory contains the complete, quality-controlled FracFeed database:

  • FracFeed_Data.csv
  • FracFeed_Data_Metadata.csv
  • FracFeed_Citations.csv
  • FracFeed_Citations_BodyMass.csv

(The equivalent files in /tmp have not completed final quality-control.)

Taxonomic standardization uses the Open Tree of Life through the rotl package.

Sub-directories:

  • Bib - Bibtex bibliographic files for the source citations
  • Figs - Summary views of the data (shown below)
  • OtherData - Original auxiliary data sources
  • R - Code for curating the raw data
  • tmp - Temporary files created during data curation

Data sources

To view all studies included in the database, see the README of Bib. The database includes the compilations of Huey et al. 2001 and Arrington et al. 2002.

R code

For open science purposes, this repository contains all code for data quality control and curation, which may be performed using R/RunMe.r. However, because our workflow entails data entry into GoogleSheets that are imported in the first step of the data curation process and have been set to "private" to increase data security, only authorized users are able to perform the full workflow.

Funding

The compilation of this database began with the support of the National Science Foundation DEB-1353827. The involvement of several contributors was made possible by Oregon State University’s URSA Engage Program for undergraduate research and the OSU College of Science Research and Innovation Seed (SciRIS) Program.

Please contribute!

If you have or know of published predator diet surveys with information on the fraction of (non-)feeding individuals, please send us the citation (mark.novak@oregonstate.edu).
