Increase the line length to 140; we have template strings that cannot be easily be broken.
Instead of using "list | None", always return a list; use an empty list as a valid condition, and raise an exception for a programmer error.
Handle nullability and empty lists.
Use black to reformat the code to fit in with Python's formal style.
