This tool helps you calculate how many hours you can afford to miss/absent across all your courses without being barred for poor attendance. It’s especially useful for students who want to plan their schedules and manage attendance effectively.
TAR UMT requires at least 80% attendance before barred list (week 13/week 6) for each course. If your attendance falls below this, you may be barred from exams or assessments.
The attendance rate is calculated as follows (based on the TAR UMT Student Intranet):
(Total Present Minutes + Total Approved Leave Minutes) / (Total Class Minutes) × 100
Where:
- Total Present Minutes: Time you actually attended class
- Total Approved Leave Minutes: Time you missed with official approval
- Total Class Minutes: The sum of all scheduled class time for the semester
To find the maximum number of minutes you can be absent (without approved leave), use:
Maximum Allowed Absent Minutes = Total Class Minutes × 20%
So, you can miss up to 20% of total class time without being barred.
Example:
If a course has 3 hours of lecture and 1 hour of tutorial per week, over 14 weeks:
Total Class Minutes = (180 + 60) × 12 = 2880 minutes
Maximum Allowed Absent Minutes = 2880 × 0.2 = 576 minutes
So, you can miss up to 576 minutes (9.6 hours) before you risk being barred.
