- Advice from an academic journal editor... Note - this is aimed at empirical work. In short check three things before you submit a manuscript: 1. Is the central contribution of the paper clear? (What does this paper help readers understand beyond the specifics of the case or empirical material?; 2. Can the central argument be strengthened and streamlined? In an 8K word article, you really can only make one central argument around which the entire paper should hinge; 3 The connection between the theoretical argument and the empirical material needs to be strong - is it clear how all of the empirical material relates to the theoretical claims you're making?
