What's new
- New colorful title screen using VBXE overlay (from
assets/atari_color2.png) - 9-color palette: black, blue, white, dark blue, yellow, light blue, gray, red, green
- VBXE overlay automatically disables during gameplay and re-enables on title screen
- Detection uses DLI color variable ($27) for reliable title/gameplay switching
How to use
Load Starquake_VBXE.xex in an Atari 800XL emulator with VBXE enabled (e.g. Altirra).
Without VBXE hardware, the game runs normally with the original title screen.
Changes since v1.0
- Replaced C64-derived overlay with clean pixel art title screen
- Fixed VBI detection ($27 instead of $AA)
- Fixed overlay staying visible during gameplay
v1.0 — VBXE Color Title Screen
First stable release. Adds C64-accurate colors to the Starquake title screen on Atari XL/XE with VBXE hardware.
Features:
- 8bpp VBXE overlay with all 7 C64 title screen colors (Pepto palette)
- Pre-rendered from C64 bitmap + per-cell color data
- RLE compressed overlay decompressed to VBXE VRAM at boot
- Auto-detects title screen via patched VBI — no external trampolines
- Overlay disables cleanly on all non-title screens (intro, gameplay, game over, high score)
- Game runs unmodified otherwise
Requirements: Atari XL/XE with VBXE (FX 1.xx core)
Download: Starquake_VBXE.xex — ready to run in Altirra (with VBXE device) or on real hardware with VBXE.
