Decentralized Infrastructure

Ben Hefner edited this page Oct 31, 2017 · 5 revisions

Gesso aims to organize a complete distributed infrastructure for manufacturing printed circuit boards, electronic components, physical assemblies, project-specific parts, and distribution so anyone can create and order complete systems for their own projects and projects created by others in the Gesso community.

Electronic Components

  • Octopart makes detailed information about finding and ordering electronics parts available with the Octopart API. Other useful tools are the BOM Tool, Common Parts Library, and the Part Series Pages (blog post). We use the Octopart API to associate components created for Gesso with real, physical electronic parts in the Octopart Parts Library. Our aim is to use this in combination with the Arrow Electronics API to make it possible to order the parts for any project as a kit, ship them to you, and provide step-by-step instructions for (re-)assembling projects.
  • Arrow Electronics provides the Arrow Electronics API and specifically, the Order API, which can be used to automate creating a cart of electronic parts from a BOM, and ordering it. Our goal is to use this to streamline the parts ordering and checkout process for projects built with Gesso, reducing it to a single "Buy" button on a project page that allows anyone to buy complete kits for any shared project made with Gesso.

Printed Circuit Boards

  • MacroFab provides their MacroFab Manufacturing API for creating new PCBs, managing materials in them, ordering PCB assemblies, managing products, managing inventory, and managing fulfillment of orders. Our goal is to integrate PCB manufacturing on a per-project basis so anyone can order small-quantities of custom PCBs for their projects and potentially make them available to others in the community.
